Terry L. Janis

Program Officer

Terry Janis, Oglala Lakota, joined the Indian Land Tenure Foundation as a program officer in 2004. In this role, Janis develops, monitors and evaluates the Foundation’s grantmaking programs as well as collaborates with ILTF’s partner organizations on special initiatives to fulfill the Foundation’s mission.

Prior to joining ILTF, Janis worked for the Northwest Area Foundation where he helped to design and implement Northwest Area’s rural leadership program, Horizons.  Over the years, Janis has worked extensively on Native American and international indigenous education and human rights issues.  Working through organizations such as the University of Arizona, the Indian Law Resource Center, and Northern Arizona University, Janis has consistently combined education and law to work with Indian leaders and students to advocate for indigenous rights.

Currently, Janis sits on the board of the Two Feathers Endowment of The Saint Paul Foundation and is a member of Native Americans in Philanthropy, the National Indian Education Association, the National Congress of American Indians, and the State Bar of Arizona.  Janis holds a bachelor’s degree from Macalester College, a master’s in education from Harvard University, and a law degree from the University of Arizona.
