Statewide Curriculum Initiative

Statewide implementation of the ILTF Lessons of Our Land curriculum speaks to adapting the curriculum to include information relative to local Indian populations and developing a strategy for implementation throughout the state.

ILTF believes it is important for individual states to incorporate historically accurate information of local Indian nations into all classrooms. This outreach strengthens Native communities as well as educates the non-Indian communities on Indian people’s relationships with their lands and cultures.

ILTF will consider funding comprehensive efforts to adapt Lessons of Our Land to Indian nations in a particular state or region and offer implementation support and teacher training statewide. Strategic efforts that look to change state standards to include Native content, that work to ensure teachers receive training on Native content, or that work with tribal education departments to advance strategies to educate their students about the land will also be considered.

The Lessons of Our Land curriculum is free and available online.

In 2008, the South Dakota Department of Education received a grant to develop South Dakota state content standards that focus on the history and culture of the "Oceti Sakowin" (Lakota, Dakota and Nakota Tribes). To see more information on this and other grants, go to the Grantees section of the website.

Grants for the Statewide Curriculum Initiative range from $30,000 to $100,000.
